One thing you get to learn while growing up in Nairobi is that the weather here can be so unpredictable. It's so bad that there's this common catchphrase amongst Nairobians linked to small talk around the weather that goes, "Hii ni jua ya mvua", which means that the hot sun is an indicator that it will rain soon.
If asked, some of these people will claim to know this due to their traditional roots in rain making, stating that they have a special connection with the weather... Maybe... Others will point to scientific reasoning, alluding that precipitation from the heat of the sun is the reason why it will rain later... Maybe... Others will tell you that they've lived in Nairobi for enough time for them to warrant your trust in the matter... Maybe...
I can't tell you which of these is accurate or even if any of them is accurate at all. What I do know is that they all would agree that the weather here is very unpredictable. You wake up one day seeing the brightest sun surrounded by clear blue skies and are immediately fooled into thinking that the whole day will be this way, only for it to rain heavily by 3:00 PM.
It's times like these that most people wish they had something warm to power through the besieging weather. That's where we come in.
Ladies & gentlemen, welcome to the TDC Originals: Fur Collection.
The follow up to our pilot collection was TDC's answer to this fundamental factor affecting day-to-day living in Nairobi. By establishing a central focus on functionality, we adapted to the use of faux fur material to make the jackets very warm, and most importantly, very comfortable. The soft inner lining acts as a heat insulator, keeping you especially warm through those chilly Nairobi days and nights.
Much of the design language from the TDC Originals Collection was transferred here, as we used the opportunity to fine tune our dexterity in pairing denim with other complimentary materials.
The team behind the marketing campaign we conducted for this shoot was quite a powerhouse. As our models, we had the superstar Chebet Ronoh, the multi-talented TilutheCreator, and the one & only MR Director himself, Collins Rotich. Behind the lens was Chienjo, who handled photography and was responsible for capturing these extremely beautiful photos.
This collection allowed us to grow as craftsmen, as we learned the fundamentals behind creating a classic denim jacket variant, the Sherpa Jacket. Our journey towards claiming the "True" part of our name: True Denim Collection, was off to a great start.
I can't wait to share our next story in my next blog post.
Until then, you should remember to keep your TDC Sherpa Jacket handy because I don't know why, but hii jua inakaa kuwa ya mvua.
